The economics of the sampler market means it's unlikely that is going to change really.ĮastWest's subscription offer though gives you an interesting way to try it out. But you could say the same thing about Kontakt, UVI Workstation, Halion, Best Engine, etc. It doesn't have near the feature set it should (at this point in its development) and doesn't work very well. In my opinion these days there are much better libraries in most every category for anything EastWest offers. Too many forum users focus in on copy protection issues and overlook the actual libraries. In the end it's really more about the library product than the copy protection. For me it's mostly been painless, but not everyone is so lucky.

The iLok software has gotten better over the years, but it still can cause issues.
If a physical iLok is stolen/lost though I believe you are in the same boat as the soft failure crowd. Zero downtime gets you temporary licenses instantly but isn't required for hardware failure recovery, but you have to wait for them to verify and reset your licenses (and buy a new iLok). If your physical iLok stops working, even without the zero downtime subscription, you mail it in and they will restore your licenses. I really don't recommend anyone use the soft iLok option. I can't remember anyone saying how EastWest handles it. Some vendors are better about this than others. Soft iLok failures (you format the hard drive, lose the computer, the computer stops working) require you to contact each company and get them to issue you a new license. I own most of the orchestral libraries out there (including recent releases like Spitfire and 8dio's libraries) and still find the Hollywood series the most effective overall.Thanks for the information. Be warned, quite a few people have had trouble running PLAY. Get both if your computer's up to it (which it will need to be - they need multiple SSD drives and a powerful processor). It does have quite a few articulations that the later series lacks however. The former still sounds great but its difficult playing effective legato passages on some instruments and doesn't have the dynamic range and playability as the latter.
The latter is more advanced with legato and additional tricks like re-bowing and decent playable runs and is the one you want for more in-depth orchestrations.
Best advice I can give is to follow the EW recommendations to the letter and reboot at the end of installation or you will most likely get some errors. The Hollywood series is more recent and recorded at Eastwest Studios. I have seen some negative press over the forums due to users having issues installing this free software. EWQLSO was recorded over a decade ago at a different venue.
